Penyrheol Bowling Club
Our Tour this year was again to the North Devon area centred on Bideford, it took place during the May Day Bank Holiday weekend,
from 4th May until the 7th May. Our base was again the Durrant Park Hotel, Bideford which laid on some excellent evening
entertainment and provided the necessary liquid and solid sustenance. As in previous years bowlers would play a series of
friendly games in the area while their wives/partners and non bowlers enjoyed the surrounding amenities and sites.
On saturday 6 male rinks played against Bideford Strand BC and 6 mixed rinks played at Victoria Park BC, Bideford. Both these Clubs played matches with us last year and again gave us a very warm welcome both on and off the green and many a frienship was renewed. Non bowlers had the opportunity to visit Exeter and Exmouth. On Sunday our games were at the United Services BC, Barnstable (6 mixed rinks) and at Barnstable Bowling Club (6 mens rinks). Again both clubs were very generous in their welcome and old friendships were renewed at United Services and new friendships were forged at Barnstable. Atlantic Village was the shopping venue for the ladies and other non players, followed by a visit to Lynton and Lynmouth.
On Monday our tour games were completed at Weston Super Mare. Here our excellent hosts,
Clarence Bowling Club, accomodated games against 5 mixed and 6 mens rinks. As ever the welcome at Clarence was very generous and
following very competitive games an excellent buffet was provided and lots of liquid refreshment was consumed before
finishing our homeward journey.
As will be seen from the following photographs it is our custom, on tour, to recognise the days losing rinks with some light hearted ritual humiliation. Special mention must however go to Paul Mitchell who managed to be in the losing rink on all 3 days.
This tour, unfortunately likely to be our last, was again highly enjoyable. Overall we were fairly successful in our games but that was of no consequence, the real results were the spirit the games were played in and most importantly the friends made on the day. Our grateful thanks go to all the host clubs and to their members for turning out and giving us some quality opposition and lavishing us with their hospitality and warm, genuine welcomes. Not forgetting all the ladies and the occasional gentleman behind the scenes who provided us with excellent refreshments and tended the bars; where would we have been without your invaluable help? Also a big thank you to our own club officials who spent many an hour carrying out the research, organising fixtures and the whole host of other things necessary in running a successful tour, your hard work was much appreciated.
Our thanks and best wishes go again to all of you in the host clubs who helped make our tour such a success, we hope to meet you all again in the not too distant future. Diolch yn fawr.
