Penyrheol Bowling Club

Penyrheol / Velindre Charity Shield

On 7th August 2011 the Club held its third Penyrheol Velindre Charity Shield competition. Our aim as usual being to improve on the sums raised in previous years, namely 1133 in 2009 and 1678.88 in 2010.
How did we do?
Well in spite of the days atrocious weather we beat our target again with a grand total of 1793 raised.

Again we had 24 rinks from numerous S Wales clubs entered but unfortunately one rink was unable to make it on the day due a family bereavement. However the 23 rinks gritted their teeth and played in attrocius conditions of heavy rain throughout the day. It was heartwarming to see the great strength of character and determination displayed by the players to ensure the days success in spite of the adverse conditions.
Well done everyone our grateful thanks to you all.

A tasty buffet lunch was taken in Penyrheol Community Centre and our thanks go to the Community Centre Committee for allowing us its use throughout the day. Also of course our sincere appreciation for the ladies who provided the buffet and the tea and toast, namely the two Susans, Andrea, Michelle, and Teresa. The hot drinks and food were certainly appreciated by all of us.
Necessary alcoholic refreshment in the form of a bar for the day was provided by Percy, Gloria and Wally. Our thanks go to them all particularly for Percy for his generous donation.

This year the rain affected the popularity of the 'Target Jacks' competition. However quite a few tested their skill and a young man from Abertridwr Bowls Club walked away with a 20 cash prize.
Prior to the Finals play-offs a lengthy raffle draw was made. If you did not win one of the many prizes remember there is always next year!

The eventual and deserving winners of a hard fought final were the 'Misshapes' a team of young men again from the Abertridwr Bowling Club, who beat the 'Yeomen' from Penyrheol. The third and fourth place play-off was between the 'Maybes' from Penyrheol and the 'Bluetops' from Senghenydd BC with the game being taken by the 'Maybes'.
Our congratulation to you all.

The winners were presented with their prizes by The Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough, Councillor Vera Jenkins who was accompanied by her husband. Our grateful thanks go to them both for finding the time, in their no doubt busy schedules, to support such a worthy cause.

The day finished off with an evening concert, raffle and auction in the Community Centre. Many thanks to all those local businesses, too many to name here, who contributed prizes and auction items, your contributions helped enormously in making the day a success.

Finally a big thank you to all the Bowling Clubs who supported us by buying Velindre badges and taking part on the day.
Special thanks must also go to the Organising Committee and to all the Penyrheol members who so generously supported the day.
Once again a big thank you everyone for such a successful day!

Our target for next year?
Yes you've guessed it, we want to beat 1800,
so please continue to support our worthy cause.
