Penyrheol / Velindre Charity Shield 2014
Unlike last year, the weather was good for our 6th Velindre Charity Shield competition, held on the 3rd August this
year. This helped us achieve our best ever result with an incredible £3022 (up £440 on last year) being raised,
bringing our total to £12042.17 over the 6 years. What a brilliant result!
Again we had 24 rinks of bowlers from various Valley and Cardiff District clubs all throwing themselves
enthusiastically into the competition, determined to enjoy the day. After a long day of bowls the eventual
winners were 'The Brothers in Arms' from Senghenydd. Well done lads.
Winners - The Brothers in Arms, Senghenydd.
The day followed the usual format with tea and toast being available in the morning in the Clubhouse followed
by a buffet lunch at the Community Centre, all organised magnificently by Michelle, Andrea, Sue, Sue, and Teresa.
Many thanks ladies for your hard work feeding the ravening hordes. Of course bowlers are known to be a thirsty lot
and thanks go to Percy and staff for again providing the bar facilities during the day and also for his
substantial donation. We must also once again thank Peters Pies, Dan and Prem at Penyrheol Londis and of course
our old bowling buddy John Wheeeler (Butcher) of Llanbradach, all of whom generously provided the majority of
the food for the day. Our thanks also to Caerphilly Borough Council for allowing us the use of the Green and
Chilling out - The young and not so young.
The day finished off with the usual evening concert, and auction in the Community Centre, the auction very ably
run by Adam and Dean.
During the evening Carl Coombes took to the stage and had his head shaved. As well as sponsoreship an auction took
place for the right to weald the clippers with a marvellous £252 being raised. Well done Carl, mmmmm- cute curl!!
Carl 'Cute Curl' Coombes.
Once again David (Dai)and Cheryl Jones organised organised a darts competition in the The Leigh Hotel, Senghenydd;
they also surpassed last years figure by raising a brilliant £800. Well done Dai, Cheryl, The Leigh Hotel and
all who took part or donated to the competition. To you all our grateful thanks.
We must not forget to thank members of all the Bowling Clubs we played this season who unstintingly
bought Velindre pens/badges/wrist bands. Mind you lads we'll be after you again next year.
Mmmmm - Funny hats!!
Special thanks must also go to our Organising Committee, Nye Evans and Jack Humphreys and to all the
Penyrheol members who so generously supported us by donating items for the raffle and auction and also
for supporting us on the day.
Once again our heartfelt thanks to all concerned in raising this years magnificent sum and we hope you
will support us once again next year when we will again be trying to beat
this years total.
Many many thanks to you all.
